When the call came from Joe McCarthy, former primary school principal of St. Patrick’s Boys National School in Gardiner’s Hill, Brian Dillons GAA’s juvenile academy was only too happy to help out.
Joe volunteers through a community-based organisation called Tuungane, whose main aim is to mentor kids and youths through sports, mainly football. Brian Dillons GAA Club generously donated a set of jerseys so that the Tuungane CBO Girls and Boys football teams could have their own identity playing other teams.
At the football training sessions, they are taught about self-care, hygiene, early pregnancies, teen marriages, HIV / AIDs and STD’s, while balancing classwork and sports. Joe McCarthy’s contact in Tuungane is mainly volunteering as a teacher training for a Norweigen charity called Giving Direct.

They run two schools in a poor area of Mombassa called Bombolulu and the schools are called Gates of Joy and Hope Education Centre.
